calling it newtown, united. trying to find a way to seize the moment and get people to change through legislation, largely our culture. it will take a lot more than a law here or there. it will take a lot of thinking and a lot of us rethinking the way we view violence and accept it in our homes. we are absolutely behind the president and his challenge when he was here at newtown high school where i am a proud graduate, it struck home that we have not done everything we can to protect our children. that's just wrong. >> you wrote eloquently and vividly about new and talked about it being a community. it has all of the trappings of what we think of in a typical small town community. i have to wonder, has our definition of the word community changed? communities used to be places that protected themselves and were small enough to keep an eye on their own. realize when someone within the community needed help. have we outgrown the ability to prevent an adam lanza or jared loughner from doing what they are going to do and regain the sense of community? >> that's the right question. that's

today. >>> a group of newtown residents has formed themselves into a group called newtown united. there is not necessarily people who have been politically active in the past or who have had any experience trying to change policies or get certain law enacted. but some members of newtown united headed to washington today. they took the day off from their jobs. they woke up at dawn. they drove to washington to go meet with members of the brady campaign to prevent gun violence. newtown united, a group of people at the epicenter of national tragedy. one of the parents who traveled to washington today was lucky enough to have his child, who attends sandy hook elementary come home from that school on friday. but he said today that he is taking action now in the wake of the shootings because he does not think the next time it should just depend on luck. >> every time something like columbine, virginia tech were happening, i would avert my eyes, and i will still think that something will be done. but all those believes were shattered on friday. and now i think we all need to speak up. >>

's go to jason carroll at the newtown united methodist church. that church has provided a spir out tether of sorts for a community awash in grief. what role does this church play today? >> reporter: well very important role this morning and this is where the church is going to be ringing the bell 2 times. everyone in the community is going to be listening as that happens. it's an ancient ritual that's taken place over decades. it used to be traditionally a call to worship but today as you know it's a call to remember. three pastors will take turns ringing the bell 28 times. i spoke to one of the pastors, past oor jane sibley. this is very personal for her. it's especially personal to pastor sibley, her family is directly connected to the school and she had an important message she wanted to get out to the survivors living here in newton. >> my grandsons give me the joy of being able to laugh for a moment and i'm refusing to allow that -- >> reporter: chase kowalski, one of the little boys who died in the shooting, went to this church here and his mother apparently, carol, has been

of the victims of this tragedy. margaret brennan is at the newtown united methodist church with more on that. good morning, margaret. >> reporter: good morning anthony. there are only a few homes here and now 27 lives to put to rest. only two children made it to the hospital before dying. the rest died at the school alongside their teacher and principal. 47-year-old dawn hochsprung was shot and killed alongside the children she cared for at sandy hook elementary school. parents remember her as a friend to the students. >> she was wonderful. always good to the kids always a smile on her face made you feel good when you were there. >> reporter: she joined the school in 2010. she kept an active twitter account posting updates on the school. she tweeted safety first at sandy hook. it's a beautiful day for our evacuation drill. so far we know the identities of three of her students. 7-year-old. emily parker who moved to connecticut with her family just a year ago and chase kowalski survived by his parents rebecca and steve. also among the dead school psychologist mary sherloc

about this in the next day or two. i know that the community of newtown is working with united way on this very subject as well and has set up a fund there. second, i want to inform you i have signed an executive order that will permit monroe and newtown to enter into an agreement concerning the use of a monroe extra school that they have, surplus school. that will allow that school to be used immediately and suspends some of the public notice aspects of entering into that agreement. obviously, this is an emergency. i'm doing that under -- i was prepared to declare a separate emergency, but the reality is we're still under hurricane sandy emergency, so i used that as the basis to execute that executive order. and, third, i'm asking that friday, december 21st, at 9:30 a.m. exactly, one week after the horror began to unfold in newtown, that the entire state observe is moment of silence and i'd like to ask those houses of worship or other buildings that have the ability to play bells to do so as well. 26 bells for the beautiful children and 6 wonderful adults who were killed at the sc
